Tyler Blanchard
Youth Program Head Coach
Tyler Blanchard joined the Wolfpack Wrestling Club in 2022. As a wrestler he won a state championship in North Carolina at Riverside H.S. then continued his journey in Raleigh at N.C. State. Following his competitive years, Tyler transitioned seamlessly into coaching. As head assistant coach at Riverside High School, he nurtured young talent, guiding them to numerous state championships and placements. With over 20 years of experience coaching wrestling, Tyler has worked with a diverse range of athletes, from preschoolers to adults, helping each individual achieve their unique goals and reach their full potential.
Pat Popolizio
NC State Head Coach
Pat Popolizio is in his 12th season as the head coach of the NC State wrestling program, a role he took on in April 2012. Under his leadership, the Wolfpack has achieved significant success, including six ACC Championships and nine straight top-20 finishes at the NCAA Championships.
Popolizio's accolades include being named the 2018 Dan Gable co-NCAA Coach of the Year and the 2016 National Coach of the Year by FloWrestling. He has also been a finalist for the NWCA Division I National Coach of the Year each year from 2018 to 2022 and was named ACC Coach of the Year in 2018, 2020, and 2021.
NC State has produced 3 National Champions, 6 NCAA Finalists, 27 All-Americans, and 28 ACC Champions under Popolizio's tenure. His recruiting efforts have consistently yielded top-ranked classes, and the team has excelled academically, earning multiple NWCA All-Academic honors and achieving a top-30 Scholar All-American Team ranking.
Prior to NC State, Popolizio coached at Binghamton University, transforming the program into a national contender. He also served as an assistant coach at American University, Army, and Sacred Heart. As a wrestler, Popolizio was a three-time NCAA qualifier for Oklahoma State and a New York state champion in high school.
Zack Esposito
NC State Associate Head Coach
Zack Esposito joined the NC State wrestling staff in April 2024 and quickly made an impact by coaching Trent Hidlay and Isaac Trumble at the U.S. Olympic Trials. Head coach Pat Popolizio praised Esposito's elite wrestling background and success at all levels.
Previously, Esposito served as the National Freestyle Development and Resident Coach for USA Wrestling and was associate head coach at Oklahoma State for seven years. He coordinated U.S. Pan American and World Teams at various levels and managed the Elite U20 Resident Program at the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center.
During his time at Oklahoma State, Esposito coached 67 All-Americans, 10 NCAA champions, 11 Big 12 Tournament titles, and 69 individual conference champions. As a wrestler, he had a 120-12 record and won an individual national title at 149 pounds.
Kevin Jack
NC State Assistant Coach
Kevin Jack, a three-time All-American and former Wolfpack wrestler, joined NC State as a volunteer assistant coach in the summer of 2021. Jack first earned All-American honors as a true freshman at the 2015 NCAA Championships and has been part of the Wolfpack support staff since graduating in 2018.
As a four-year starter at 141 pounds, Jack earned All-American honors three times and finished second in school history with 113 career wins. He placed fifth at the NCAA Championships in 2015, third in 2017, and sixth in 2018. He earned a bachelor’s degree in sport management (2018) and a master’s degree in parks, recreation, and tourism (2020) from NC State. After graduating, he served as the Pack’s Recruiting Coordinator.
Originally from Danbury, Conn., Jack posted a high school record of 122-11 and was a two-time New England Champion.
Tommy Gantt
NC State Assistant Coach
Gantt, a native of Belleville, Illinois, wrestled for NC State from 2012-16.
He was an ACC champion in 2016 (157 pounds) as well as an All-American. During his time in Raleigh Gantt was a two-time ACC finalist. In 2016 he was crowned the Midlands Champion.
Gantt was named All-ACC in 2014 and 2016.
Internationally, Gantt was a US Open Finalist in 2019. That same year he won the bronze medal at the USA World Cup. Gantt was also the Henri Deglane Grand Prix Champion and the 2018 Bill Ferrell International Champion.
Trent Hidlay
Wolfpack RTC Athlete
Trent Hidlay is a distinguished wrestler for the Wolfpack RTC, boasting numerous accolades from throughout his career. He is a four-time NCAA All-American (2020-2024) and a three-time ACC Champion (2021-2024), earning All-ACC Team honors each year from 2020 to 2024. His academic excellence is equally impressive, being named a five-time NWCA Scholar Athlete All-American, a two-time ACC Wrestling Scholar Athlete of the Year, and a CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2022. Hidlay has consistently made the ACC Academic Honor Roll and All-ACC Academic Team throughout his collegiate career.
In the 2023-24 season, Hidlay was the NCAA Runner-Up and ACC Champion, finishing with a remarkable 28-1 record and earning 23 bonus point wins. His performance secured him a spot in the U.S. Olympic Trials, where he finished third and earned a place on the USA National Team. In the 2022-23 season, he claimed a spot on the U.S. World Team for the U23 World Championships and finished fourth at the NCAA Championships with a 24-3 record. The 2021-22 season saw Hidlay place fifth at the NCAA Championships and repeat as ACC Champion, finishing with a 21-2 record.
Hidlay's success began early in his career. In the 2020-21 season, he was an NCAA Finalist at 184 pounds and the ACC Champion. He also earned NWCA Scholar All-American honors. During the 2019-20 season, he earned 2020 All-America 1st-Team honors by the NWCA and claimed a bronze medal at the 2019 Junior World Championships.
A standout in high school, Hidlay was a two-time state champion with a record of 154-14 and was named a 2017-18 ASICS All-America second-team selection. Academically, he maintained a 4.0 GPA and was a Wrestling USA Scholastic All-American. His older brother, Hayden, was a five-time All-American for the Wolfpack.
Jamill Kelly
Wolfpack RTC Coach
Jamill Kelly, a 2004 Olympic silver medalist, is a seasoned wrestling coach with an illustrious career. He has been a two-time World Team member and a four-time US National Team member. His collegiate career at Oklahoma State (1997-2000) laid a strong foundation for his coaching journey. Kelly has coached at several prestigious institutions, including Stanford, NC State, Cal Poly, Harvard, Arizona State, and UNC.
In freestyle coaching, Kelly has served as a member of the USA Wrestling national coaches pool, USA Cadet World Team Coach (2013-15), and USA Junior World Team Coach (2016). He was also on the support staff for the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games and helped establish the California Regional Training Center.
Kelly is known for his ability to develop elite student-athletes, a reputation supported by his success across various coaching roles.
